Professional Learning Communities
This is my first blog. I really do not understand what I am doing. I am working on my masters degree and this is one of the assignments. I am starting a blog about teaching and Professional Learning Communities. A PLC is a way of collaborating with colleagues about what is happening in your classroom. Colleagues give suggestions and brainstorm help for specific challenges you are facing. One of the challenges I face is that I teach In School Suspension. I want to be creative and inventive as I teach, but making ISS fun is not a good idea. I am trying to come up with creative ideas for students in ISS, but not so exciting that they want to come to ISS. Also, they have to be silent and stay in their seats. They are not allowed to work in groups. Does anyone have any ideas?

Well Missy, I appreciate the position you hold as an ISS teacher; it's not an easy job, nor is it glorified! I agree with your position on needing to encourage a productive environment while still maintaining the idea of discipline and respect. One of the new things we have started is a "homework" ISS class that is designed specifically for students who fall behind in their work. Teachers fill out a sheet for each student that details the assignment(s) they are missing, the materials needed to complete the missing work, their current grade in the class, and then the ISS teacher collects the top 6-7 students in need and places them in "ISS" with her each Tuesday to complete the work. I'm giving you a brief rundown of course, but you can see how it takes the guesswork out of figuring out what homework they need to do. Just one idea! I hope it helps! Good luck and again, I think this is a great idea!
